The Lions Club of Sydney Chinese Inc is a member of Lions Clubs International, an international non profit community service organization, upholding a common motto “WE SERVE”. It has now been over 100 years since Melvin Jones established the first Lions club in USA in 1917. A typical Lions year begins on 1 July and ends on 30 June in the ensuing year.

Today, there are Lions clubs in over 200 countries and geographical areas all over the world. In District 201N5, which covers the Sydney area and Norfolk Island, there are 80+ clubs with over 1,800 members. Amongst these, there are some 30 Chinese-based clubs. Sydney Chinese Lions is the first of these Chinese-based clubs chartered in May 1995.

Currently, Sydney Chinese Lions comprises 120+ active Members and 8 Associate Members. The 8 Associate Members that the club is privileged to have inducted are Past International President Guðrún Björt Yngvadóttir, Past International President Joe Preston and his wife Joni Preston, Past International President Barry Palmer AO, the late Past International President Wayne Madden, Past International President Wing Kun Tam, Past International President Sid Scruggs III and Past Council Chairman Tapani Rahko. In membership terms, the club has been enjoying top ranking in District N5 for over two decades.

In the universe of Lions Clubs, we have had in the opinion of many, the best ever District 201 N5 Convention held in Castle Hill, Sydney in 2014 when our own Lion Dr Anthony Cheung was District Governor. The nine lions dance, the two pipe bands, the Jazz band as well as the Youth Wind Orchestra and the vocalists were absolutely professional. All the proceedings of the business of the Convention went smoothly. Without disappointment, most people nominated for a position were elected. Even the audited accounts of the District were approved without a single question asked.

The Sydney Chinese Lions Charity Ball 2025 held at the Grand Ballroom, International Convention Centre Sydney, was a resounding success in raising funds for our major beneficiary The Lions International Foundation (LCIF). The donation of the record high sum of $80,000.00 is to assist them with their humanitarian and life saving initiatives and operations. This donation propelled the aggregate amount of donations made by the Club to exceed AUD$1.3 million.
